Welcome to Bonsall
East of Oceanside, where northern San Diego rolls inland, unincorporated Bonsall is a rural dreamland! Characterized by world-famous equestrian facilities, expansive ranches, and a neighborly vibe. Multi use trails etch a network of possibilities throughout Bonsall’s preserves and nearby ocean breezes maintain a pleasant climate. Stretching roughly 32 miles within the Peninsular Mountain foothills, Bonsall’s sparsely developed terrain holds avocado orchards, the Wild Wonders animal refuge, secluded mansions, and brand-new master-planned developments. Bonsall is also home to the upcoming San Diego County Parks and Recreation’s: San Luis Rey River Park, sure to bring even more charm to this hidden gem.
Bonsall has two small shopping centers that offer several restaurants, a movie theater, and a bit of nightlife. It is also home to the award-winning Bonsall Unified School District which provides 3 elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school. Bonsall offers quick access to Highway 76 through its center, and to Interstate 15 along its eastern edge. While boasting 3 local wineries, residents are also under 20 miles from dozens of Temecula wineries about 10 miles away. Also, Bonsall is just minutes away from trendy Oceanside restaurants and surf spots, and 7 miles from Historic Downtown Fallbrook (home of the famous Avocado Festival!)
The two shopping centers are the Mediterranean villa-style River Village Plaza, which opened in 1990 and offers casual to fine dining, River Village Cinema, retail shops, and the newly renovated Major’s Marketplace for groceries. Additional grocery options are just a few miles north in Fallbrook. The second Bonsall plaza, known as The Village, gathers a mini-mart/liquor store, donut shop, fast-food favorites, salon, veterinarian, and the firehouse-themed Backdraft Bar and Grill. Other eateries include Fresco Grill for date nights, or Z Café — open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, serving everything from pancakes to sushi.
Bonsall’s main event is the annual Fall Festival in the parking lot of Daniel’s Market where locals enjoy vendor booths, a beer garden, a kids’ area, games, and a cornhole tournament. There is also a locally popular annual Christmas Tree Lighting. We have horse-drawn wagon rides, kids’ activities and photos with Santa. Wild Wonders also hosts a Winter Wonders and Holiday Lights tour, showcasing nocturnal species within the refuge.
